Gallery design

I'm deciding how to present my gallery, which is really the main part of a portfolio website.
I want to include boxes in the same format as my main page, and maybe incorporate the photo montage idea as well. However I don't want it to get too complex. I like it because it follows the same box/cube theme I am aiming to achieve. I also like that it is contemporary and cleanly presented.
Below is one gallery I found to be well presented and easy to use. This website is appealing because it shows restraint in colour choice and the menu bar is a fun design, while not being tacky or complex. However the amount of adverts on the left side of the site is off putting. If the advertisements were not here it would look cleaner and the asymmetrical look would also be more noticeable and intriguing.
